Established

In 1963 a site reserved for church development was reached by walking across sheep paddocks near the Woden town centre.

In September 1964, an outreach Sunday School was commenced by two ladies from Canberra Baptist Church with the Hughes Baptist Church officially formed on 14th November 1965 with 28 foundation members.

‎By June 1966 Sunday School enrolment was 78 with a further increase to 149 by June 1968. 

February 1969 saw Boys’ Brigade start, with Girls’ Brigade starting in 1978.

Stage one of the church building was opened on 2nd November 1968, with stage 2 opening in May 1977. 

A new sanctuary was constructed in 1996 with some alterations to the lower halls in 2020. 

‎Lead Pastors 

‎Lead Pastors 

As the church formed in 1965, Reverend James Allen was inducted and continued until 1974.

In 1975, Reverend Frank Wakeling became the pastor, followed by some interims until Reverend Roger Bacon was called in 1982.

Roger Bacon served until 2008.

He was followed by a series of interim pastors.

More recently, Reverend Lyn Thow and Reverend Duncan Besci served as senior pastors. Reverend Peter Graham served as acting Lead Pastor in 2021. 

Reverend Dr Aidan Luke commenced as Lead Pastor in 2023.
