Becoming a Christian

In the bible, there’s a story about a jailer, who asks a Christian leader (Acts 16:30-31) what he must do to be saved. The answer was, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” The leader explains, “That if you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

There’s no special way to become a Christian. You simply need to tell God that you believe the gospel. You might like to pray (simply talk to God) like this.

  • Admit to being a sinner (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23).
  • Believe that Jesus is God’s Son, that He died for you, and that His death can save your soul (John 3:16, Romans 5:8-10).
  • Confess that He is your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-13).

Here is a suggested prayer structure

  • Ask Father God, I come to you right now, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, asking you to accept me.
  • Confess your sins: I confess I have sinned against you. I’ve not followed your commandments, and I’ve broken your laws.
  • Repent (say sorry): I repent of my sins and ask for your forgiveness.
  • Believe in Jesus: I believe Jesus Christ, your only son, came to earth and was born, that he lived among us, and was crucified to pay for my sins.
  • Accept Jesus as your Saviour: I accept Jesus as my Saviour and as Lord of my life.
  • Seek guidance and protection: Send the Holy Spirit to guide me, protect me, and counsel me. Protect me from Satan and his evil forces.
  • Pray for strength and courage: Help me grow in wisdom, knowledge and love for you and your ways. Give me the strength and courage to change my ways.
  • I ask in your holy and precious name, and I thank you for making me a Christian.
  • Amen!

If you earnestly prayed that prayer, you are now a Christian!

Once you’ve prayed, tell us so we can support you as you begin to live life for Jesus.
